Just last week during the Xmas shopping frenzy I was sitting with a potential client in the Sunshine Plaza, creating a FREE custom marketing campaign for their business. The topic of Local Directories came up.

Sounds good in theory, but here’s the cold hard truth about why that no longer works.
Why local directories no longer work
Obviously the reason local directory and classified ads are so ineffective (actually there’s a number of reasons but we’ll stick to the main problem today) is because no one actually reads them anymore.
Think about this for a minute.
When was the last time you picked up a directory, newspaper, etc, because you wanted to search for a particular product and/or service?
Can’t remember, can you? I know I wouldn’t have a clue when I did it last, I think it was back in 1943!
Now try and remember the last time that you did this:
Let’s say that you need the windscreen replaced in your car and you need to find someone that can do it today. So, the first thing that you reach for to find someone to do it is…
Your mobile phone, of course.
Good old Dr Google will help you find whatever it is that you need to find.
When was the last time that you remember doing that? Probably in the last hour or so right?
Times have changed
Mobile phones, Social Media and the internet, like it or not, have revolutionised the way we interact, purchase and do business with each other.
Local directories and newspapers haven’t adapted to that change (hence the stories above) yet they still want to be paid the same premium for their services, which no longer work like they once did.
So what’s the solution?
After listening to the problems above that my clients were facing, and talking to them about the type of solutions they were looking to purchase, and given the fact that business owners love the convenience of the local directory system where they can pay annually and their advertising is taken care of.

Reason Four: Your advertisement will actually get read
Some time back I wrote a blog post titled:

Ths point of the post was that FREE (and most paid for) newspapers are very rarely read anymore (just like local directories) so the chances of a potential customer seeing your advertisement and actually coming in to do business with you is minimal.
The way kingfisher.rocks alleviates that problem is by driving highly targeted traffic to a specific page that’s all about your offer and nothing else.
Which, on a side note, is a problem with the larger deals sites that you see that just want you to offer huge discounts (something kingfisher.rocks refuses to do) on your products to sell them.

Maybe they’ll come back but more than likely they won’t.

I could go on and on about retargeting and the possibilities that it presents, but that’s well beyond the scope of this post.
