Let’s give ’em somethin’ to talk about
(Somethin’ to talk about)
A little mystery to figure out
(Somethin’ to talk about)
Let’s give ’em somethin’ to talk about
How about love?
Â
What are the most common mistakes that people make with their posts, give us like 3 to 5 of your worst nightmares?
In October 2016 I spoke at the Turn Up Annual Music Conference in Nambour.
First question off of the rank was that question above.
My response?
Dead simple straight up they talk about themselves.
I just did this, I just fed my cat, I just posted a photo, I just posted a video. No one cares less about what you did, not even your Mum ok!
People want to know about themselves, and what’s in it for them.
Now that may seem a little harsh, but it’s the truth.
The main reason business owners struggle to build an effective Social Media presence is because they still haven’t figured out that their online presence isn’t about themselves, it’s about their customers.
Contrary to conspiracy theories (spread by people that mainly post crap) their stuff isn’t getting shared on Facebook for one reason, people aren’t interested in what they’re posting.
When Bonnie Raitt wrote the song, Let’s give them something to talk about.
She absolutely nailed what you need to do with your Social Media presence for people to spread the word about your business far and wide.
You have to give them something worth talking about.
A client and mentor of mine (Barry Bull) figured this out many years ago when he ran Toombul Music.
If only Social Media had been around in his day imagine what he would have done with it!
Take a look at the video below to see the hysteria that he created for his business.
Barry brought Rock Stars to his shop so that their fans could get up close and personal with them.
The result?
He gave them something to really talk about and word about Toombul Music spread like wildfire.
Now leveraging off of the celebrity status of Rock Stars was a very smart move, but obviously not an option that’s available to every business.
But that doesn’t mean you can’t make Social Media work for you.

I literally learned about Burgers By Josh because of someone (two people actually) talking about it.
Here’s what happened…
One of the young engineers at work got a photo text message of a burger, not just any burger, a Burger By Josh Burger.
Hey, Beanie check this out (the photo of the burger) he said before proceeding to tell me all about Josh, his burgers and the cult following that he’s built.
The line up that you see in the video above is an everyday occurrence!
Obviously, every business owner would love to have the type of raving crowd lining up for their wares every day that Josh has.
But I’m willing to bet that very few of them would be prepared to put in the massive amount of effort that Josh would have put in to build that raving audience.
Contrary to what many of the self-proclaimed Social Media Guru’s will tell you, turning likers, followers, fans (whatever you want to call them) into customers is all about building online marketing systems that can consistently and reliably transform people from strangers into customers.
How do you create systems that do that?
The short answer is that people do business with people they know like and trust, so you need to create marketing systems that build trust for you.
Some time back I wrote a blog post called…
How to Transform Your Business Into the Go To Business In Your Industry
It’s a 21 step blueprint that you can literally copy and deploy that’ll have you well on the way to building a massive cult following like Josh.
I know what you’re thinking now though, who has time to do all of that Beanie?
Well, the way I see it you have to options.
-
-
- Find a way to make it happen.
Â
- Give up and close the doors to your business for good.

Again that may seem a little harsh, but it’s the cold hard truth. The days of simply placing your ad in the local yellow pages and waiting for a steady stream of customers to come through your doors are well and truly gone.
The internet has drastically changed the way customers are reached.
Many business owners that have gone with the theory of if you just ignore it (social media & digital marketing) hopefully it’ll go away, are finally starting to wake up to the fact that it’s not going away.
What it’s actually doing is starving them of customers that are being reached by business owners like Josh, who’ve mastered using the modern day version of the yellow pages (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, etc) to create killer word of mouth marketing for their business.
What’s the easiest way for you to get started today?
It’s what I call the…
Constructive use of Social Media Challenge

So to answer the original question…
Is it really worth the time, effort and heartache (that’s required) to build a Social Media following of raving customers?
The answer is a resounding YES.
That’s given you want a daily line of rabid customers anxious to buy what you have to sell?
