Dilettante…
A person having a superficial interest in an art or a branch of knowledge : {Dabbler} Merriam – Webster
True story…
Some time back I promoted a post {the one below} on my Facebook Business Page using the new Send Message {which is killer for opening the conversation with a potential customer and turning that conversation into a sale, hint, hint} option.
This is one of the Messages {isn’t word for word but it’s close} that I received.
My friend has a business I want to become his – her Social Media Manager, what do I need other than a computer and internet connection?
I politely point this person towards the following blog posts to get them started…
• The 21 Day Local Business Domination Blueprint
• Is it really worth building a Social Media following?
• How my client made $1040 in sales with a $25 promoted post
• Time management is a joke you can’t manage time
Let me say this…
I have the utmost respect for this person wanting to better themselves and acquire new knowledge.
But if they do become the Social Media Manager for their friends business, without the proper training first, what that friend has hired themselves is a…
Social Media Marketing Manager Dilettante
There’s a snowflake’s chance in hell that they’ll be able to consistently and reliably generate sales from their Social Media Marketing efforts.
That is why you’re using Social Media isn’t it?
To generate more sales and ultimately double them?
Obviously, it was easy for me to pick this person as a Dilettante {I see them all day every day so I’m pretty damned good at spotting them now} but the real question for you is…
How can you tell if your Social Media Manager – Consultant has the knowledge required to actually make you sales?
They might be an awesome person, and are great at posting, {big hint here, posting is not marketing, unless it’s done properly} maybe they can even post standing on their heads with both thumbs tied behind their backs and blindfolded.
But if they can’t answer the questions I’m about to give you in the Social Media Marketing Dilettante Test, then all of that ain’t worth shit.
I want you to really understand just how important that this is to your business, and this is the best way that I can explain it for you.
In his book 80/20 Sales and Marketing {aff link} the definitive guide to working less and making more Perry Marshall calls doing Social Media with extreme competence {which is very rare} a $1000 per hour task.
In case you don’t know who Perry Marshall is, here’s what Forbes has to say about him.
If you fail in your ability to apply the rules of ‘opportunity discernment’, 80/20 and The 4% Factor in your life as an entrepreneur, you’re wasting 96% of your valuable resources. Hungry for more wisdom and examples of how to turn your business around with the 80/20 rule and The 4% Factor? Grab the 230-page book. * Forbes
As Perry points out “Doing Social Media with extreme competence, is very rare”
And the reason it’s very rare is because there’s generally a Dilettante in charge of it.
Dilettante…
A person having a superficial interest in an art or a branch of knowledge : {Dabbler}
Are you picking up what I’m putting down here?
We have a saying in the construction industry that sums it up perfectly…
The lunatics are running the asylum!
That’s exactly what happens in your business when you have a Dilettante running your marketing.
There’s a lunatic running the asylum.
Some of what I’ve shown you so far may have made you feel a little uncomfortable, after all, no one wants to be seen as doing things the wrong way, do they?
However, there’s an extremely important reason that I’ve done this {make you feel uncomfortable} which is…
The Bullseye Principle Step Four, Deal With The Issues {Solve problems; seize opportunities}
My business mentor Barry Bull created The Bullseye Principle that he built the incredibly successful business Toombul Music on.
Step Seven of the Bullseye Principle is…
Reap the rewards {Like Double Your Sales}
As he continually reminds me, most people never ever get to reap the rewards, because they try and skirt around step four which is…
Deal with the issues.
It may be tough for you to go to your manager and or consultant and say I’m sorry but what you’re currently doing just isn’t performing, something needs to change.
But if you don’t deal with your Dilettante issue, you’ll never get to step seven of reaping the rewards.
So now that you understand how incredibly important that it is to get this right, you want the test so that you can start dealing with the issue immediately right?
The Social Media Marketing Dilettante Test
Ask them this question first…
If I gave you $100 to sell {insert your product} from Facebook how would you…
1. Write the post?
2. Who would you Boost it to?
3. What would you do to make people buy it?
4. Where would you send them to buy it?
Want to know just how effective the questions in that test can be when you know the correct answers to them?
Here’s two results that I’ve been able to help my clients achieve in the last few months, by knowing how to answer them properly.
1. A client used it to make $1040 in sales from a $25 Boosted Post.
2. I sold another client’s $700,000 business for him with a $25 Boosted Post.
Now you can see why Perry Marshall calls “doing Social Media with extreme competence {which is very rare}” a $1000 per hour task.
Oh yeah, I almost forgot, if you’d like to download a copy of all of the answers to those questions, and see exactly what my client did that made her $1040 from that $25 Boosted Post, you can do that by clicking here.
Here’s a bonus question for them.
If they get this one right, they can skip straight past Dilettante to Genius level.
If they can map you out a Digital Marketing System to Double Your Sales that looks something like this {click here} without looking at it first, then don’t let go of them whatever you do.
However, I would be questioning them as to why they haven’t implemented it for you yet.
So now you have a decision to make…
- Do you continue doing the same old same old {like pretty much everyone else is doing}, and keep getting the same results that you’re currently getting.
- Or are you keen to find a smarter, more cost effective way to move forward, and gain a huge competitive edge over your competition in the process?
If the answer’s number two, then here’s how I can help you best next…
What you need to do next is see when the next available time is to take…
