The only real surprise about Fairfax job cuts is that people are actually surprised that it’s happening!
We have a saying in the construction game…
Adapt and overcome
That’s because you just have to. It’s a fast paced environment where results are driven by unrealistic schedules and budgets caused by shareholders wanting to see a return on their investment fast.
In order to survive and come out at the delivery end of a project looking good, you do literally have to adapt and overcome, every day of the week.
What is happening at Fairfax is not new. In the not too distant past blacksmiths (the catalyst for the modern day boilermaker, which I am) all lost their jobs because…
- You all stopped riding horses to work.
- Welding and other machinery was invented.
So it’s been happening for hundreds of years.
I repeat what has happened is really no surprise
The ironic part is the exact same forces (the internet, social media, etc) that are causing so much angst for the people losing their jobs, is also the solution to their problems. If (and this is a big if) they will change their thinking to see a massive opportunity and…
Adapt and overcome
What do I mean by that?
Well it was hardly a surprise that the print media was going to come to a grinding halt at some point in time. I mean digital has been around for a little while now. I used to be an avid weekend paper reader.
But I haven’t bought more than the occasional paper for over ten years now.
So what’s the opportunity for the axed Fairfax workers.
The internet of course. Here is a few real life examples of what I am talking about.

Jon tells the story far better than I ever could, have a read here => Jon Morrow’s story
Are you picking up what I am putting down?
So that is the writers – editor’s covered, let’s take a look at the photographers
Meet Clarke Little whose wife wanted a picture for their house
I repeat…
Are you picking up what I am putting down here?
The world and life in general are not going to stop changing, just because people think it’s unfair. I started out my working life as a boilermaker, now I am a marketing coach. The opportunities are out there, you just have to grab life by the balls and go out there and take them.
